"It was, he thought, the difference between being dragged into the arena to face a battle to the death and walking into the arena with your head held high. Some people, perhaps, would say that there was little to choose between the two ways, but Dumbledore knew - and so do I, thought Harry, with a rush of fierce pride, and so did my parents - that there was all the difference in the world."
-J.K. Rowling, "Horcruxes," Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, 2005
INTRODUCTION: Five years. The past five years have felt more like fifteen. I like to think as "internet time" (IL) as being faster than "real time" (RL). In IL, one makes friends quickly, and loses them just as quickly. Time is measured not in time elapsed so much as members joined, hits gained, graphics completed, layouts coded. If five years in RL feels like eons to me now, then five years in IL may be a century. As it's an anniversary, I thought it fitting to reuse a raster I drew a few years ago (though not quite five). I alos decided it was high time I stopped cowering before DHTML and start understanding it in hopes of one day properly manipulating it on my own.
LAYOUT: Five years, and candied has gone from every style imaginable to and back. So I tried to incorporate everything here: both bright, bold colors and pastels; bubbles and circles; brushes; raster-centric design. And, though they aren't so visible, DIV's and i-frames- just for old times' sake. And just because I can't do without them.
YOUR WHEREABOUTS: The abode you currently visit is that of Odile Kane, sophomore at the University of Texas in Austin, Texas, USA. Welcome to my hideaway :). Some information of value:
COMO DIVERTIRSE?: I really do love contrasts. Light and dark, irony, long and short, smile and frown, bold and shy. Absurdity may be the comical element of our generation, but I'll take conundrum instead; the impossible is far more amusing than the implausible. I'm a useless photographer, but would love to learn some day. Also on that list are serious studio art, proportions, quantum physics, microgenetics, and the bronte sisters- as are a few million things I'm forgetting.
STATE OF THE UNION: Candied's at a crossroads. To be honest, it's been at one for quite some time now. I'm not quite sure what its purpose is, or what to do with it- thus the lack of content, rhyme, and reason. But I can't bring myself to move on from it- it's my one unchanging, happy link to my internet past. Thanks to it, and to those I met here, I was able to accept the fact that not being just like everyone else can be more asset than detriment, and, as cliche as it sounds, that being yourself really is just fine. And thus I keep that physical remembrance in virtual form. Again, conundrum- told you so.
HISTORY: Being a student of commerce and thus enjoying efficiency, a succint summary of your current whereabouts:
HOSTEES: are listed in the bottom right-hand corner. From approximately 40 to 4- a mere 10% remaining, but all four are lovely. And I find it fitting that Mish, my first hostee, is in my remaining last 4. Do visit- they're brilliant girls.
EXPLANATION: So, I've an amusing story to tell. You see those words in yellow along the bottom, "Don't panic, we are hanging here"? Jack's Mannequin fans will recognize the lyrics. I was lounging about on AOL one evening when, out of the blue, a stranger IM-ed me. Thinking it was a friend from class that I had yet to meet online, we spoke for a bit. The stranger then revealed herself as Alice, a supposed student from the Southern U.S. who had supposedly IM-ed me by random choice from a list of online users. I was at first sure that my room-mate and/or her boyfriend were playing tricks on me- it'd be their style, I think- but then decided that, forgive me, they simply weren't weathered enough actors to know what reactions to take. The conversation centered mostly around alternative music, predominantly The Rocket Summer and Jack's Mannequin. As I was designing this layout at the time, and was quite amused, I have included lyrics as a tribute to that odd occurence.
LINK: To your left are three buttons. The first is a linking button made by the ever-talented Stef; the second is a link to my portfolio, Candolio; and the third is a link to my printable stationery website, FCI.
